Three injured in Leap Day crash

Three people sustained major injuries in a Wednesday, Feb. 29, Lenox Twp., crash that closed down the interstate for much of the day.

Robert Shave, 65, and Nora Shave, 63, both ofSchenectady,N.Y., were traveling south in the left lane of I-81 when driver Robert Shave lost control of his vehicle on the snow covered roadway.

Shave’s Hyundai Santa Fe spun clockwise, hitting the west guard rail with its driver’s side.

The second vehicle, a Kenworth tractor trailer driven by Perry Nievinski, 42,Mosinee,Wis., was traveling in the right hand lane and struck the Shave’s vehicle.

Both vehicles broke through the guide rail and traveled down an embankment.

Police said the Shave’s SUV rolled over numerous times and traveled about 300-feet before coming to a rest on its roof.

The tractor trailer slid down the embankment and the last trailer broke off the fifth wheel and slid on its right side coming to rest on the roof of theSanta Fe. The truck tractor struck a tree with its front end.

Emergency personnel assisted police at the scene. Tpr. Michael Joyce investigated the crash.

The three crash victims were taken toCommunityMedicalCenter,Scranton, for treatment.
