The Susquehanna Sabers were able to bring a championship back to their community with a big class A Eastern Conference Championship victory over Old Forge last weekend.
The Sabers dominated in route to a 40-13 victory led by running back Jarred Mills and quarterback Kyle Donavan. Mills finished the game with 18 carries for 140 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also added four receptions for 89 yards and another reception touchdown as well.
Donavan finished the game with great numbers as well, completing eight of 20 pass attempts for 162 yards and two passing touchdowns and he also added one rushing touchdown.
This was a fantastic game played by the entire Sabers team when they needed it most.
Donavan recently spoke about the feelings he and his teammates felt after winning the Championship over Old Forge.
“It’s was the best feeling” Donavan Said. “The way we won was amazing and it was so much fun beating Old Forge the way we beat them. I wouldn’t want to go out any other way.”
Donavan is a senior this season. He took over the starting quarterback job for the final eight games of his junior year and never looked back. In his two years of experience as the quarterback of the Sabers he said he never saw the entire team come together like they did to beat Old Forge and not only for themselves, but for the entire community as well.
“We all really wanted it. That was the most I have seen us come together the last three years. It was a great feeling. I think all of us wanted it, not for just us, but for the community too,” Donavan said.
This was a season full of fantastic memories for Donavan and the Sabers from start to finish. Besides winning the Championship, Donovan said his favorite moment of the season came back in week five in a comeback victory against the “bad boys” of the league.
“This year against Carbondale we were down by 14 early and we came back, I remember throwing a fade pattern to Shaun Anderson that scored, and having Ian Townend trip me on a long run, and seeing Jarred (Mills) dive into the end zone. It was a great game and just so much fun to play in. I played Carbondale all through Peewees and had never beat them. They were always the ‘bad guys’ growing up.”
The championship has been a long time coming for Donavan and the Sabers. Their winning attitude started before training camp when most of the Sabers team entered the inaugural Flag Football Tournament to raise money for the Blue RIdge Triplets in the beginning of August.
Had there been more teams in the tournament there would have been a prize involved for the winners. When Donavan was confronted about the possibility that there would be no prize, he replied, “I just want to win, I don’t care about the money.”
From that moment on everyone knew the Sabers were in for a strong season and they certainly didn’t let anyone down.
