Montrose’s Meteors battled a Lackawanna Trail team firing on all cylinders as the Lions rolled to a 48-16 Division III victory over Montrose on Friday.
“All around we played a solid game, which we’ve been trying to do,” Lackawanna Trail coach Steve Jervis said. “The only frustrating thing is I wish we could have had a game like this earlier in the year, where we put everything together.”
Trail (1-3 Division III, 3-6) posted all the points it needed in the first half, including five scores in the second quarter alone.
Montrose (0-4, 0-9) punted to end the first quarter, and just 10 seconds into the second, Marvess Rosiak rushed 38 yards for a touchdown, extending the Lions’ lead to 21-0.
Later, with less than a minute to go in the quarter, Rosiak returned a Meteor fumble for another score for Lackawanna Trail.
Eric Laytos posted his third touchdown, a 40-yard run after the Lions acquired the ball on downs, with 8:25 left in the second quarter.
Laytos, who plowed for 170 yards on 11 carries, got Lackawanna Trail on the board with two scores in the first.
In the second half, Montrose came out with a burst of energy. Nathan Clark accounted for five of the carries in the Meteors’ first series, including a 3-yard rush to post their first points. Dylan Heeman fed Kurt Kimsey for the extra points to make it 48-8.
Clark finished with 110 yards on 16 carries.
The Meteors struck again in the fourth quarter, this time on Heeman’s only completed pass of the game – a 15-yard connection on first-and-10 with 8:46 left.
“The guys just keep trying,” Montrose coach Jack Keihl said. “We give it everything we got. They were trying right to the end. They just go hard, and that’s all we can ask of them.
“Hopefully we take a little bit of that energy into next week against Mid Valley.”
