Members of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Montrose gathered Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Montrose VFW Post to celebrate the 70th year of their local chapter.
According to BPW Club President Connie Hitchcock, the club is a community outreach organization, which concentrates on raising funds for local student scholarships and for groups that support women in the community.
“The club has a strong presence in Susquehanna County, and there is another group of the BPW meeting in Susquehanna,” Hitchcock said.
Although all of the charter members of the club have passed away, the club had some historical items on display at the celebration, including its original charter.
At the anniversary event, the club presented a donation to “Hunts for Healing,” and gave a brief history of the Montrose BPW Club to the guests in attendance that evening.
In addition to providing college scholarships to seniors at Elk Lake and Montrose Area high schools, the Montrose BPW sponsors a scholarship for adult women who are interested in attending college or returning to finish a degree. This is known as the Gail Golden scholarship, in memory of a local businesswoman who died of cancer.
This year, the BPW partnered with the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center to host its second annual Empowerment Summit in October.
The club also serves an annual Veterans Day dinner at the Montrose VFW; and collects donated items for the Women’s Resource Center as an outreach to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
The club meets on the second Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW, except for the months of July and August, when they hold a summer picnic instead.
