Instrumentalists shine at Region Orchestra

Some of the area’s top instrumentalists performed Friday in the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association 2017 Northeast Region Orchestra hosted by Bangor Area High School.
The three –day festival culminated with a concert Friday evening. The orchestra was under the direction of Conductor Margery Deutsch.
Students attending the regional festival were from a total of 50 school districts from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties in District 9; and Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, Pike and Schuylkill counties in District 10.
The program opened in “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich; followed by Aaron Copland’s “Suite from The Tender Land.”
Following a brief intermission, the orchestra returned with another overture, this one by Johannes Brahms, “Academic Festival Overture.”
Music from the Disney animated movie, “Frozen,” by Kristen and Robert Lopez, arranged by Bob Krogstad, delighted the audience.
The concert culminated with George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture,” arranged by Robert Russell Bennett, which featured the violins carrying the familiar tune, “Summertime.”
Students from Susquehanna and Wyoming counties participating in the 2017 Northeast Region Orchestra included:
Montrose Area: Grace Wood, Flute; Kyra Ricci, French Horn; Caleb Reyes, Trombone;
Blue Ridge: Skylar Secord, French Horn.
Tunkhannock Area: Catherine Trexler, Percussion; Sabrina Traver, Violin II.
