Montrose Area superintendent announces retirement

The Montrose Area School District will begin a search for a new superintendent to start after June 30, 2018.
Superintendent Carol Boyce announced her plan to retire at the Monday, Nov. 13 school board meeting.
Boyce has served as the district’s superintendent for over four years and plans for retirement included gardening and looking after a new puppy.
School Director Richard Jordan offered up a “shout out” to Boyce at the end of the meeting, noting he had enjoyed the time he has worked with her through the years.
The board had extended Boyce’s original three-year contract on Aug. 8, 2016. The contract had been set to expire on Feb. 3, 2017 but was extended until June 30, 2018.
A personnel issue has prompted the board to schedule a special meeting for Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., following a scheduled executive session.
At Monday night’s meeting, the board tabled approval of a letter of engagement with Attorney Joseph Persico, of Rosenn, Jenkins & Greenwald LLP, to represent the district in gas lease matters with Repsol Oil & Gas USA, LLC.
Board member Gloria Smith said she had not read the letter and was not prepared to vote on the letter of engagement.
The district’s comprehensive plan received final approval by the board, along with an executive summary.
The district’s new Director of Curriculum, Christine Rosenkrans, attended the meeting and gave the board an update of work she’s been doing since her official Oct. 24 start date.
Rosekrans said she was meeting with teachers and reviewing data to get a better view of what is happening in the district and to help identify areas that need improvement.
She also noted that she, and several teachers, would be attending a training at IU19 on text dependent analysis, which they would then roll out to the faculty.
*Update: On Tuesday, Nov. 14, Montrose Area Jr.-Sr. High School Principal Bill King was hired as the superintendent of the Lakeland School District starting in January 2018. Prior to coming to Montrose, King served as the superintendent of the Scranton School District.
