Brozonis’ 3-pointer seals Eagle win

The match-up of division leaders didn’t disappoint last week when Mountain View traveled up Route 92 to take on defending Lackawanna League Division IV champion Susquehanna.

The two teams traded punches in the first quarter with Mountain View taking a 16-14. Mikey Schermerhorn scored 14 of his game high 23 points in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter The Eagles seized control in the second period, holding the Sabers to 3 points while scoring 14 of their own.

Susquehanna answered with a 15-11 third quarter to cut into the Eagle lead, 41-32. Adam Rockwell knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 8 of his team-high 18 points in the stanza.

Mountain View scored early in the fourth to take a 15-point lead before Susquehanna mounted a furious rally. The Sabers marched back behind Rockwell’s continued hot hand. Bryce Baldwin’s efforts in the paint chipped in 5 points. The Sabers also took advantage at the charity stripe converting 7 of 8 free throw attempts. The rally gave Susquehanna a two point lead, 53-51.

With 15 seconds on the clock Mountain View’s Tyler Henke drove the lane and pitched to Wyatt Brozonis and the guard buried a game-winning three.

Susquehanna’s Mason Deakin found Rockwell at the top of the key, but Rockwell’s three attempt caromed off the rim and Deakin’s second-chance shot fell short as the buzzer sounded.

Schermerhorn led the way for Mountain View with 23 points. Mike Fanelli added 12. Brozonis finished with 8 and Henke chipped in with 7.

Rockwell led the Sabers with 18 points; while Bryce Baldwin added 15; and Deakin finished with 10.

Mountain View used a 26-9 advantage over the middle quarters to prevail over Forest City 47-34 on Friday.

Up by one after one quarter, the Eagles tightened down on defense and forced a series of Forest City turnovers. Mountain View outscored the Foresters to take 24-18 halftime lead.

The Forest City offense continued to be stymied by the Eagle defense in third, enabling the Eagles to seize control of the game.

Schermerhorn paced the Eagles with 15 points; Fanelli added 10. Jalique Gillyard chipped in with 8.

Jay Lipko led the Foresters with 12 points.

Susquehanna got back on the winning track with a 48-36 victory at Lackawanna Trail.

The host Lions jumped out to take the first quarter advantage. Baldwin scored 9 of the Sabers’ points.

In a slower-paced second quarter Susquehanna pulled within one to cut the Lions’ halftime lead to one, 19-18.

Susquehanna surged in the third as Baldwin continued to work inside with 6 points. The perimeter players got more involved with Deakin also adding 6.

The Sabers put the game out of reach as Baldwin tacked on another 7 points and Deakin knocked down 5 of 8 free throws to seal the win.

Baldwin finished with 25 points. Deakin chipped in with 11 and Canyon Stone added 8.

Elk Lake exacted revenge on rival Montrose in a replay of the opening round of the county holiday tournament. The Warriors fell behind early but prevailed in the fourth quarter claiming a 54-48 win.

Like the previous game, Elk Lake had a slow start and the Meteors built a 10 point lead at the half. Andrew Rapisardi’s hot hand knocked down 2 of his 3 treys in the first half.

The teams traded scores in the third with Elk Lake trailing by 12 as the game entered the fourth quarter.

 The Warriors maintained pressure on the Montrose offense and took advantage of the Meteors’ struggles at the free throw line to         erase the deficit and prevail 54-48 at the buzzer.

Adam Anderson led Elk Lake with 13 points, including 3 field goals from behind the arc. Matt Mowry provided 12 points off the bench while Hunter Bomboy and Nate Preston chipped in with 11 and 9, respectively.

Rapisardi paced Montrose with 16 and Brennan Gilhool added 13.

Elk Lake opened the week with their first win in league play when they hosted Forest City on Tuesday.

The host Warriors wasted little time taking control jumping out to a 20-6 advantage after one quarter. Forest City’s offense came alive in the second but still trailed at the half. Elk Lake put the game out of reach in the third stanza.

Bomboy and Kyle Vanderfeltz led the way, with each scoring 12 points. Kevin Valvano chipped in with 9; Preston and Mowry added 8 and 7, respectively.

Montrose gained the first win by a Susquehanna County team in the Lackawanna Division III/IV crossover games when they hosted Old Forge last Tuesday.

The Meteors held the Blue Devils to 14 points in the first half and took a 21-14 lead into the locker room. But Old Forge came out inspired in the third quarter and knotted the score at 29 at the end of the third quarter.

Montrose locked down defensively in the fourth and outscored Old Forge to capture their first win of the regular season.

Jacob Weaver led the Meteors with 12 points and Evan Snyder added 11. Rapisardi chipped in with 9 and Gilhool and Tyler Rebello added 8.
