MA, BR fall short in district duals

After their thrilling league finale last week, Blue Ridge and Montrose entered the district team duals with an eye on a championship.

Blue Ridge hosted one half of the Class 2A bracket and found themselves pitted against Wyoming Area. With two matches happening at the same time Blue Ridge brought in the blue Susquehanna mats in honor of their wrestling co-sponsorship with Susquehanna Community High School.

Isaiah Valentine and Adam Roe led the way for for the Raiders in their 45-27 victory. Valentine pinned Kyle Emsley in 1:11 at 120 pounds and wrestling 152 Roe pinned Tyler Martin in 53 seconds.

At 132 pounds, Blue Ridge’s Cole Soden defeated Adam Sigman 6-0. The Raiders also earned forfeit wins for Gavin Crawford (113), Nate McArthur (126), Tom Gudykunst (170), Eli Aldrich (220), and William Clauson (285).

Blue Ridge’s Alec Martin lost a narrow 8-7 decision to Vincenzio Giambra and Adam Babcock had to withdraw with injury. Zach Consla was pinned at 160 pounds and Ben Gudykunst fell at 195.

In the nightcap, Blue Ridge fell to eventual district champion, Tunkhannock, 45-29.

The Raiders got consecutive pins from Zach Konsla, Adam Roe and Tom Gudykunst. Konsla pinned Tunkhannock’s Tyrese Konen, and Roe took down the Tigers’ Lucas Carpenter. Gudykunst pinned Tyler Chesle for the Raiders’ final points.

Blue Ridge also collected forfeit wins for Soden (126) and McArthur (126).

Tunkhannock wrestlers pinned Valentine (120), Martin (138), Ben Gudykunst (220), and Aldrich (285).

Montrose also defeated Hanover in their quarterfinal match held at Lake Lehman.

Montrose got four pins with Bryan Ryan pinning Caden Schiel at 220 pounds in 1:27. Justin Kelly followed that up with a pin at 285 when he took down Derek Knorr in 1:17. Andrew Rosevear pinned Liam Reilly at 132 pounds at the 3:15 mark, and Marc Avila pinned Hunter Thompson in 1:29.

The Meteors also got forfeit wins for Seamus Fish at 195 pounds, Nick Harder (106), Brendan Kanna (138), and Joe Hester (145).

In the nightcap, host Lake Lehman made quick work of defeating the Meteors, 64-18.

Bryan Ryan pinned Thoma Nalbone in 2:32 at 195 pounds, and Justin Kelly won at 28t with an injury default over Cole Robbins-Long. Hester also picked up another forfeit win.

Both local teams lost close matches on Saturday in the consolation semifinals.

Blue Ridge fell to Hanover Area 36-30.

Eli Aldrich pinned Caden Schiel at 220 while Cole Soden won a 5-2 decision over Liam Reilly. At 160 pounds Zach Consla decisoned Hunter Thompson 6-5.

Martin (138), Crawford (113), and Ben Gudykunst (182) garnered forfeit wins.

Montrose lost a narrow match to Scranton Prep 38-37.

Marc Avila earned a pin at 182 over Luca Dennis in 1:10 and Joe Hester earned a major decision over Joe Monahan. Rosevear won a 10-4 decision over Ayden Berndt at 132.

Collecting forfeit wins were Ryan (195), Fish (220), Kelly (285), and Nick Harder (113)
