Jones, Korty capture XC wins at invitationals

After opening Lackawanna League action Wednesday local cross-country teams competed in several invitationals over the weekend.

Friday night Elk Lake traveled to Wyalusing to participate in the Lasagna Invitational.

Sophomore Krista Jones took top honors finishing in a time of 19:54 to edge Jules Jones of Cowanesque Valley. Teammate Sadie Bosscher took third in 20:45 as the Lady Warriors finished third in the team standings.

Molly McGlynn came in 26th in a time of 25:24 and was followed by Lilly Struzierri who finished 32nd at 26:17 and Emma Chotkowski who placed 34th finishing in 26:46.

The Warriors finished in second place behind the host Rams as Justice Johnson and Noah Staff led the way finishing ninth and tenth respectively. Johnson finished in 18:30 and Staff was right behind at 18:31.

The duo was joined in the top 20 by Matt Miller and Dylan Way as Miller finished in 19:20 to finish 19th while Way crossed the finish in 19:26. Issaic Brewer came in three seconds behind Way to cap the Warriors scoring at 80.

Also competing for the Warriors were Noah Atkins, Matt Balli, and Thaddeus Woodhead.

In Scranton at the 26th annual Lackawanna County Commissioners Cup, Forest City’s Rachel Korty captured the win completing the course in a time of 20:24.

Mountain View’s Kathryn Long was another local finisher placing in the top ten as she finished sixth after crossing the finish line in 21:25.

She was joined in the top 25 by teammate Genevieve Larkin who placed 15th with a time of 22:21.

Cameron Robinson helped Blue Ridge to an eighth-place finish in the team standings as she came across the finish line in a time of 23 minutes to capture 24th place.

Robinson was joined by teammates Lillian Bleck (40/24:03), Holly Geyer (52/24:55), Kayleen Conklin (55/25:02), and Ashley Tomasacci (79/30:45).

Blue Ridge boys finished tenth behind Jack Condon’s finish in the top 20. Condon ran the course at McDade Park in 17:45 to take 17th.

He was followed by teammates Junior Brandon Gentile (61/19:56), Freshman Duncan Geyer (72/20:49), Ryan Stallings (81/21:32), Zachary Randall (92/22:42), and Grifon Whitehead (97/23:09).

Mountain View did not have enough runners to compete in the team portion, but Junior Aiden Long was next highest local finisher after Condon placing 37th with a time of 18:50.

The Eagles were also represented by Cohen Anderson (57/19:35), Matt Dougherty (80/21:27), and Matt Mason (93/22:42).

Over the Labor Day weekend Montrose competed in the 45th Annual Cliff Robbins Invitational held at Misericordia University.

The Montrose girls finished second behind Scranton High School as Freshman Paige Brewer and Senior Hannah Perkins finished in the top ten.

Brewer placed seventh crossing the finish line 21:42 and was followed by Perkins three seconds later.

The duo was joined on the medal stand by teammate Stephanie Summerville who came in a minute later to finish 18th.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Meteors were Elizabeth Chidester (29/23:37) and Annika Bixby (32/23:50).

Also competing for Montrose were Kelley Warner, Margaret Nebzydoski, and Bridget Bendock.  

Montrose boys finished sixth out of 19 teams with Senior Nick Coy leading the way.

Coy finished 7th with a time of 17:59. He was joined in the top 20 by Freshman Sam Stashko who came across the finish line in a time of 18:35.

Gabriel Wilber (49/19:39), James Bixby (56/19:48), and George Thompson (73/20:15) rounded out the scoring for Montrose.

Also running for the Meteors were Nick Harder, Jonathan Lyden, Cody Leonard, Declan Giannone, Richard Purdy, and Alex Rossi.
