Lady Meteors knock FC from undefeated ranks

The second week of Lackawanna League girls’ soccer action found movement near the top of the standings.

Montrose surged up among the leaders of Division II and Forest City maintained its spot on the top perch of division III despite suffering their first loss.

Montrose rallied with two goals in the second half to take a 3-1 victory over Mountain View.

The Lady Eagles struck first when Tori Pellew found the back of the net at the 5:45 mark. Chalice Guyette broke free to knot the score at the 28 minutes

 Tangi Smith put Montrose ahead 10 minutes into the second half off a pass from Lizzy Lathrop. Lathrop found Hailey Dalton for an insurance goal with 10 minutes to go.

Mountain View held the shot advantage 23-18 as Montrose Goalkeeper Mya Snyder collected 11 saves. Morgan Hammond registered 15 for Mountain View.

Montrose came from behind twice to battle for a lead in a thrilling 3-2 overtime loss to Lakeland last Wednesday.

The Lady Meteors trailed 1-0 in the first half when Smith scored unassisted just under the 18-minute mark. Chalice Guyette sent the game into overtime when she scored with six minutes left in regulation.

However, Lakeland’s Stephanie Russmiller scored two minutes into overtime to prevail.

Montrose bounced back with a 2-1 win over Forest City to knock the Lady Foresters from the ranks of the undefeated.

Cici Adams scored twice in the first half taking passes from Dalton and Jewelia Ralston to put the Lady Meteors ahead.

Forest City scored just before halftime when a miscommunication resulted in an own goal off a Montrose defender.

Forest City came into the game with Montrose undefeated after a 9-2 thrashing of rival Carbondale.

Bella Pleska and Isabelle Richner each scored twice and Pleska had an assist to lead the Lady Foresters over the Chargerettes.

Katie Keller, Lizzie Bartholomew, Jessica Curley, and Halie Gray each had first-half goals for Forest City.

The Lady Foresters outshot Carbondale 22-10 and Forest City goalkeepers Maddie Bailer and Keller recorded two and three saves respectively.

Mountain View came from behind to earn their first league win with a 7-3 defeat of Holy Cross.

Trailing 2-0 Sydney Barhite scored the first of her two goals to ignite a four-point run for the Lady Eagles.

Reagan White, Abby Neri, and Maressa Salansky also scored for Mountain View as they took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

After intermission, Barhite scored 90 seconds into the half off an assist from White. Natalie Cross scored off an assist from Neri and Michaela Hammond placed a Salansky pass into the back of the net and the Lady Eagle defense held Holy Cross scoreless in the second half to preserve the 7-3 win.

Mountain View outshot Holy Cross 16-7 and Goalkeeper Morgan Hammond recorded four saves.

Katie Cusatis scored two second-half goals to rally Elk Lake past Mid Valley 2-1.

Trailing 1-0 Cusatis took a pass from Sam Hunsinger 14 minutes into the second half to tie the game.  She then broke loose from the Lady Spartan defense to score the go-ahead goal with ten minutes remaining.

Elk Lake Goalkeeper Tamara Voda turned away nine of the ten Mid Valley shots.

The Lady Warriors fell to Lakeland when the Lady Chiefs erupted for ten goals over a 32-minute span of the first half.

Lakeland outshot Elk Lake 23-5 as Mercedes Zajackowski had seven saves and Voda recorded six for the Lady Warriors.
