The Montrose Area girls’ basketball team is returning to the courts after a 20-7 season in 2009-10 where the Lady Meteors brought home the Lackawanna League Division III championship.

However, coach Al Smith wants to take it one step further this year with the Meteor team.

“Our goal is to try and improve on last year’s season,” Smith said. “And we hope to have an injury free year.”

Returning to the hardwood for the Meteors are seniors Mimi DiPhillips, Sam Abbott and Katelyn Spellman, juniors Sarah Krupinski, Dallas Ely, Katie Stranburg, Brooke Malloy and Brittany Hartman and sophomore Sam Dixon.

Smith said that Forest City and Mountain View will be strong teams to contend with on their path to success.

“Forest City has everyone back from a strong team and are well coached,” Smith said. “And Mountain View has a lot of talent. They probably have one of the best post players in both leagues combined.”

However, Smith feels that Abbot and Ely can step up and be stand out players for the Meteors this season.

Montrose’s varsity girls’ basketball team is comprised of seniors DiPhillips, Abbott and Spellman, juniors Krupinski, Ely, Stranburg, Malloy and Hartman, sophomores Dixon and Cierra Hartman, and freshmen Nicki Lewis, Allison Lewis, Meagan Spellman, Erica Reeves, Ashley Lattner and Shelby Stewart.

The Meteors get their season started on Friday, Dec. 10, at Valley View at 7:15 p.m.
