The annual battle between the county’s only two football programs, Susquehanna and Montrose, takes on more significance as both teams enter the game looking to crack into the win column.

No matter where the teams are in the standings coming into the game the battle is always the same as the winning school keeps the Bluestone trophy on their school grounds until the following year’s game.

“It’s always a tough, physical game no matter what the records are,” said Susquehanna Coach Kyle Cook. “The kids want to get the Bluestone and they want to keep it.”

“You never want to lose the Bluestone game,” added Susquehanna Senior Lineman Eli Aldrich, who will be playing in his fourth Bluestone Game.

Because the two programs are in co-sponsorship with neighboring schools’ students from Elk Lake and Blue Ridge are also on the teams with students from Montrose and Susquehanna.

“We’ve played against a lot of these guys since we started playing football,” said Montrose Senior Quarterback Ethan Cina.

Montrose will look to take the trophy back to the county seat as Montrose has only possessed the trophy once in the series claiming victory in 2015.

“It was one of my top priorities coming into the season,” added Cina. “We’ve only won the game once and we’d like to be the ones to do it again.”

Montrose comes into the game 0-3 after losing Friday to Western Wayne 55-13.

The Wildcats scored their first eight possessions as Running Back Janiszewski scored three touchdowns on runs of 55, 42, and 32 yards.

The Meteors got on the board in the second half when finished a drive by connecting with Cameron Harder from seven yards out in the middle of the third quarter.

In the fourth Harder completed a drive with a two-yard dive into the endzone. Henry Rogers tacked on the extra points.

Cina finished the game 21-44 passing with two interceptions and the touchdown. Dominic Palmiter caught eight passes for 95 yards and Dylan Geertgens hauled in seven for 69 yards.  Harder and Damien each had three receptions.

Susquehanna comes off a loss to Mid Valley where they also had trouble mitigating the Spartans run game.

The Sabers got off to a bad start when Mid Valley’s Jomar Morales took the opening kickoff to the house and put the Sabers into a 6-0 hole seven seconds into the game.

Mid Valley took advantage of a Susquehanna turnover and Sebastian Brudnicki scored the first of his three touchdowns to give the Spartans a 13-0 led after the first quarter.

In the second Brudnicki broke off runs of 30 and 28 yards to put the game out of reach. He finished with 123 of Mid Valley’s 201 rushing yards.

The Sabers got on the board in the fourth quarter when Calvin Scheideler scampered 12 yards for a score and Layne Fisk tacked on the extra point.

Scheideler led the way with 59 yards on 13 carries.
