Lake

One of the most anticipated cross country meets of the season more than lived up to expectations.

Elk Lake and Valley View, two of the best teams in District 2 and the state, went head-to-head and featured a dramatic sprint to the finish that left the course record in its wake.

Elk Lake’s Mike Bedell bolted to the line in 15 minutes, 53 seconds, just pulling ahead of Valley View’s Aaron Wilkinson, who came in at 15:55. Both times beat the course record at Valley View and Bedell’s win helped Elk Lake edge the Cougars, 27-29, Wednesday.

The race between Bedell and Wilkinson was stride-for-stride for almost the entire 3.1 miles, right up until the end.

That’s where Bedell charged and grabbed first place.

His effort, combined with a fifth-place finish from Luke Jones, a sixth-place finish by Jeff Horvath, a 10th-place finish from Sean Carney, and an 11th-place finish from Will Bennett gave the Warriors enough to edge the Cougars.

In addition to Wilkinson, Valley View had Jordan Siddons finish fourth overall, Jake Kanavy seventh and Tony Rodio ninth.

All 10 finishers in the race, including Abington Heights’ Sean Burke, who was third, and Blue Ridge’s Jake Hinkley, who was eighth, had times faster than 17 minutes.

Elk Lake improved to 12-0 sweeping the cluster meet. Valley View won four meets on the day to run its record to 13-1.

Elk Lake’s girls’ cross country team also remained unbeaten, as Maria Trowbridge set course records.

Trowbridge took first with a 19:05 finish on the girls’ side.

Coming in behind Bedell for the boys was Luke Jones in fifth at 16:17, Jeff Horvath in sixth at 16:32, Sean Carney in 10th at 16:55, Will Bennett in 11th at 17:15 and Bryan Grosvenor in 15th at 17:30.

On the girls’ side, finishing behind Trowbridge was sister Elizabeth Trowbridge in third at 19:25, Kirsten Hollister in seventh at 20:10, Abby Zdancewicz in 11th at 20:34, Emily Williams in 12th at 20:37 and Lainey Bedell in 13th at 20:39.

Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Valley View where the boys’ team picked up a pair of victories and girls faced a shutout.

Blue Ridge’s boys took a 20-35 win over North Pocono and 21-34 win over Montrose while falling 18-37 to Valley View, 27-28 to Abington Heights and Elk Lake 17-43.

The Blue Ridge girls took a 15-45 loss to Valley View, and 15-50 losses to North Pocono, Abington Heights, Montrose and Elk Lake.

The Blue Ridge boys were led by an eighth place finish from Jake Hinkley at 16:32 and a 14th place finish from Mike Robbs at 17:28.

Blue Ridge’s girls’ team was led by a ninth place finish from Allison Hall a 20:29.

Montrose

The Montrose Area boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Valley View on Wednesday where each picked up a win and four losses.

Montrose’s boys defeated North Pocono 23-32 while facing at 16-39 loss from Valley View, a 23-32 loss from Abington, a 21-34 loss from Blue Ridge and a 15-48 loss from Elk Lake.

On the girls’ side, Montrose defeated Blue Ridge 15-50, while falling 22-35 to Valley View, 22-39 to North Pocono, 20-41 to Abington Heights and 18-45 to Elk Lake.

The boys’ team was led by a 12th place finish from Ryan Martin at 17:19 while the girls’ team was topped by a fourth place finish from Samantha Bennici at 19:38.

Mountain View

Mountain View’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Susquehanna on Wednesday where the boys’ team picked up a 15-50 win over Susquehanna.

However, the boys’ team faced a 15-50 loss from Scranton Prep, a 16-37 loss from Lakeland and a 15-48 loss from Lackawanna Trail.

On the girls’ side, Mountain View tied 50-50 with Susquehanna and Lakeland while taking 15-50 losses from Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep.

The girls’ team was led by a 13th place finish from Kelly Purdy at 25:22.

In junior high action, Mountain View faced 15-50 losses from Susquehanna, Lakeland, Holy Cross, Scranton Prep and Lackawanna Trail on both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

Susquehanna

Susquehanna’s Saber boys’ and girls’ cross country teams hosted a meet on Wednesday afternoon where both teams were handed shutouts.

The boys’ team took 15-50 losses from Mountain View, Scranton Prep, Holy Cross, Lakeland and Lackawanna Trail while the girls’ team lost 15-50 to Lackawanna Trail, Holy Cross and Scranton Prep while drawing 50-50 to Mountain View and Lakeland.

Neither team scored runners in the top 25 on the varsity level, however, junior high runner Ivy Christensen set a new girls’ record at 12:35 while taking first place.

The girls’ team picked up a 23-33 win over Lakeland, a 15-50 win over Mountain View and Lackawanna Trail, a 28-29 win over Holy Cross while falling 24-35 to Scranton Prep.

Susquehanna’s junior high boys’ team lost 23-34 to Lakeland while taking a 15-50 win over Mountain View, Lackawanna Trail and Scranton prep and losing to Holy Cross 24-35.

Forest City

Forest City’s boys’ cross country team picked up a pair of victories in a home meet on Thursday afternoon.

The team defeated Western Wayne 27-28 and Carbondale 25-30, while falling 17-38 to Honesdale, 17-37 to Delaware Valley and 15-40 to Wallenpaupack.

Forest City was led by a 13th place finish from Matt Terry at 18:00.

In junior high action, Forest City’s boys fell 15-50 to Honesdale and 15-40 to Wallenpaupack and Delaware Valley.
