Lady Sabers punch state ticket

Fast and furious. Susquehanna got out to a quick lead and emerged recharged after haltime to roll to a 48-25 win over Salem Christian to reach the District II/District 11 Subregional Final and guaranteed a spot in the PIAA State Class A playoffs.

Susquehanna got out to the early lead when Megan Kiernan scored seven points and Mackenzie Steele added six and Taylor Huyck chipped in with four as the Lady Sabers led 18-7 after one quarter.

“We wanted to prepare like we were playing Nativity and play like it was the final,” said Susquehanna Coach Kirk Fallon.

Both teams struggled with turnovers and inefficiency in the second quarter as both teams added six more points and Susquehanna took a 24-13 into intermission.

Steele and Huyck combined for eigh points in the third quarter as Susquehanna began to pull away holding Salem Christian to half dozen points for another quarter to take a 38-19 lead into the final stanza.

“Our defense was the key,” explained Steele. “Making sure we did the little things and keeping them out of the lane.”

Huyck was a perfect 4-4 from the line in the fourth quarter as Susquehanna extended the score to the final outcome.

“We just tried to play our game and not let them dictate what we did,” explained Steele.

Huyck led all scorers with 17 points while Kiernan added 14 and Steele joined them in double figures with 10. Mackenzie Heath added five points and five assists.
